When the color of a metal lamp base doesn’t match your space aesthetics or oxidized metal turns your lamp into a gloomy look, painting to change the base appearance to a new look is such a great, fast, and budget-friendly way.
This detailed step-by-step guide will show you how to paint a metal lamp base in a simple process and get the best result.
The first thing to know about how to paint a metal lamp base is what materials we need to prepare. Are they popular or hard to get? Do they suit your budget?
Materials
Usage
Sandpaper (220-grit or 400-grit)
Sand the metal lamp base
Painter’s tape
Cover unpainted areas
Drop cloth or newspaper
Cover and protect underneath the surface
Primer for metal surfaces
Apply a primer
Brush-on paint or spray paint for metal
Paint the metal lamp base
Clear topcoat (Optional)
Maintain durability of metal surface
Note: Using incompatible paint can cause peeling or fading as it doesn't adhere well to metal. For a durable finish, choose the liquid or spray paint labeled specifically for metal, as it provides better, more even coverage and durability.
Step 1: Clean the Lamp Base
Firstly, choose a well-ventilated working space, the best ideal outdoors. Spread a drop cloth or newspapers out to cover the underneath surface. For better protection, use a paper box to catch excessive paint and place it on the top. You better wear a face mask to protect yourself from metal dust or bad paint smell.
If everything is ready, let’s kick it off this process!
To make sure we have a clean and smooth lamp base surface for painting, use a damp cloth to remove old paint, dirt or dust on the base surface. For deep cleaning, use a combination of gentle detergent and water or white vinegar and water in an appropriate proportion. Then let it dry.
Step 2: Sand the Surface
To strengthen the bonding of paint and metal surface, use sandpaper to sand the base. You can choose two options: use 220-grit sandpaper to create a slightly rough surface or use 400-grit sandpaper if you prefer a smooth finish. Clean the base one more time to remove any metal dust powder after sanding with a damp cloth.
Note: You shouldn’t pass this step otherwise the paint may easily peel or chip off after a short period or hard to apply the paint.
Step 3: Tape Off Non-Metal Parts
To prevent paint from getting into unwanted areas such as electrical components (switch, cord, and bulb socket) or decorative pieces use painter’s tape to cover these areas. If it's necessary, you should remove decorative features, shade, and other non-metal parts from the lamp base.
Note: Not properly protecting areas that you don’t want to paint may lead to sloppy paint coverage. So, if you don't have any better alternative, do not pass this step.
After proper preparation, we are pretty sure that the paint would adhere well to the metal lamp base surface and is ready to be painted.
Step 4: Apply Primer
Use a spray or brush-on primer to apply metal primer which is specifically formulated for metal surfaces as well. Highly recommend using spray primer hence it is easy to apply and can create a smooth coat. After that let it dry thoroughly in around 30 to 60 minutes.
Note:Do not skip this step if you want a smooth and even surface that will hold the paint and give better coverage and durability, especially a dark or glossy metal surface. Otherwise, the metal lamp base may deal with annoying problems such as poor adhesion, rust, or discoloration, especially if the lamp is in a humid area.
Step 5: Paint the Lamp Base
There are two painting methods:
Brush-on liquid paint: Use a brush to mix the paint properly. Then, use that brush, apply a thin layer on the metalbase surface, and let it dry. Repeat several times till you get the desired color.
Spray paint: Shake the can to mix the paint inside. Spray the first layer of paint on a small area on the surface then move across and past it in an even stroke until cover the entire lamp with a thin coat of paint. Adjust the turntable or the cardboard (if have one), you another hand and spin it slowly while spraying. Once each layer has dried, apply the second/third coat.
Note:
Be patient and wait for the paint to dry entirely before applying another layer or the paint underneath may lift off or drip, resulting in a patchy surface
To get a smooth finish instead of a hammered one, you should use a soft brush to minimize brush marks
Avoid applying thick paint coats which can cause bubbles, drips, and a lumpy finish, even increasing the potential for paint coat damage. Additionally, the drying and curing time last longer too
Store leftover paint away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture after sealing it tightly, to preserve the quality of the paint
Step 6: Apply a Clear Topcoat (optional)
After the final layer of paint has dried, seal the paint by adding a topcoat and you may be surprised with wonderful advantages. Thanks to the topcoat, the surface is protected against scratches and stains, contributing to extra durability. Moreover, topcoats can enhance the base surface by adding shine and giving a professional-looking finish.
Note:For the best result, ensure the topcoat is compatible with the paint type used. Skipping the topcoat can save a little money but leaves the paint vulnerable to scratches, chips, and fading, which is much more loss.
Step 7: Let it Cure
Remove the tapes that cover the unpainted area, then leave the lamp base to completely dry and cure. It normally takes from 24 hours to several days depending on the paint type. Consult the recommended drying time on the paint packing. Leave the base to dry in proper ventilation areas.
Note: If you do not rush, do not use a hairdryer, instead, you should leave it under the sun to shorten drying time, which can cause the paint to bubble or crack.
Next, reassemble other parts (if have), reconnect the lamp to a power source, and use it.
