Mechanical keyboards are frequently sold with a blank spacebar. You may want to spice things up by customizing your spacebar. Sometimes you want to keep things clean and simple by using a different colored keycap on your space bar. However, choosing a spacebar can be pretty tricky because there are so many different sizes and types available. Luckily, Hiros Art has put together this ultimate keycap size guide to help you select the right ones for your mechanical keyboards.
Keycaps are the plastic caps that cover each individual key and contribute significantly to the aesthetics of a keyboard. Every keycap on a keyboard is built around a 1u base size. When purchasing a keycap set for your board's specific layout, you'll need to know the size of the required caps and which row they sit on.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, the unit of measurement used in keycaps is u. The smallest 1x1 unit used for letters, numbers, the function row, arrow keys, and so on is denoted by 1u. Larger keys are referred to in proportion to those referred to as 1u keys. For example, a standard Tab key is 1.5u which means that it’s 1.5x the size of a 1u key. (Stabilizers are also required for keycaps that are 2u or longer).
It's critical to understand what sizes are required for which keyboard layouts, especially if you use unstandardized layouts. Most sets will work if you use a full-sized keyboard or a tenkeyless keyboard, as they are compatible with most 104-key sets. It's when you get smaller that things get tricky. If you are looking for a spacebar for your mechanical keyboard but are confused about what size to choose, Hiros Art is here to help.
